Guns by Quelle Chris @quellechris

“Guns” by Quelle Chris is a project that I will play for a long time.  It’s another classic project from Quelle Chris, the Detroit born rapper/producer married to Jean Grae living in Brooklyn.  In 2018, Quelle released a joint project with Jean Grae called Everything’s Fine that was easily one of the best projects of the year.  In 2017, he released Being You is Great, I Wish I Could Be You More Often, which was again one of the best albums of that year.  Quelle Chris dropped Lullabies for the Broken Brain and in 2016, Innocent Country in 2015 and Niggas is Men in 2013.  I could make a long playlist of the best tracks (in my opinion) from all of these projects and you would have an extremely creative hip hop experience that cant be compared to anything else.

Quelle’s style is lyrical, musical, sometimes funny and sometimes dark and serious.  It is as versatile as a range of emotion can be and the sometimes off kilter sound makes it impossible to label the music anything specific. The only thing that’s certain is that it’s so dope and his music keeps getting better.

On top of the musical and lyrical mastery on Guns, Quelle Chris often makes his own album art and creates animations for his videos.  For someone like me who experiments with many different media, the fact that a very creative musician also creates his own visuals reinforces the idea that this artist has something to say and has the vision to tell interesting stories.

I think Black Milk should switch the title of this project with his last solo project, Album of the Year.  Or Album of the Year II and just keep tallying them up.  I didn't see this one coming, but I think its by far Black Milk's best overall project. He keeps advancing, refining his sound and pushing forward.  It's the perfect balance of his rapping with his tracks, perfect feature artists (most notably Black Thought, Quelle Chris) for the vibe and the album art is dope too. If you haven't heard it, check it out!
